Caring for silk products: how to ensure the longevity of silk products

A symbol of true luxury and elegance, silk needs special care to maintain its excellent properties over time. Whether you've invested in silk pillowcases, bathrobes or pyjamas, proper care is essential to ensure longevity and to maintain luxurious softness. Let's now take a step-by-step look at how to care for silk products so that their properties and luxurious appearance are maintained for many years to come.

Step 1: Read the care instructions

Start by checking the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Maintenance instructions can usually be found either on the label attached to the product or on the website from which the product was ordered. Depending on the type of silk fabric, the material may have specific maintenance requirements and these instructions should be the basis for maintenance.

Step 2: Wash by hand in cold water

Silk is delicate and machine washing can damage the fabric. Opt for hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent.

Step 3: Avoid strong detergents

Choose a pH-neutral, silk-friendly detergent. Strong chemicals can weaken the silk fibres and reduce the natural lustre of the silk. If possible, use a detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics.

Step 4: soak and wash

Soak the silk item in detergent water for up to 5 minutes. Avoid over soaking as this can cause the dye to separate and also damage the fabric.

Step 5: Shake gently and rinse thoroughly

To remove dirt, gently shake the water with your hands. Then drain the detergent and fill the sink (or bowl) with clean, cold water. Rinse the silk item thoroughly until all the detergent has been rinsed from the item.

Step 6: Remove excess water

After rinsing, avoid untwisting the silk as this may distort the fibres. Instead, place the item on a clean, dry towel and gently press down to allow the towel to absorb excess water.

Step 7: Air dry, out of direct sunlight

Silk is best dried in the air. To avoid fading, place the item in a shady place to dry, out of direct sunlight.

Step 8: iron on low heat

If ironing is necessary, use the lowest heat setting. Always iron on the wrong side of the fabric (for example, by turning a pillowcase upside down) and place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the silk to avoid direct contact.

Step 9: Deposit wisely

When not in use, store silk products in a cool, dry place. Avoid prolonged hanging of silk items as this may cause the fabric to stretch. Instead, fold them up and place them in a bag or box made of breathable material.

Step 10: Make sure your hands are clean when handling silk products.

Finally, make sure your hands are completely clean when handling silk products. Oils, creams and dirt on your hands can transfer to the silk, affecting its appearance.

Caring for your silk is a worthwhile investment of time, ensuring the longevity and luxurious appearance of your prized possessions. By following these instructions, you will master the art of silk care and enjoy the luxury of your silk products for many years to come. Treat silk with the respect it deserves and it will reward you with lasting beauty and unparalleled comfort.
